The City
London has managed to preserve its 2,000-year-old architectural legacy since its founding in 43 AD. The city is still home to magnificent examples of Roman, Victorian, and Tudor architecture. You can explore up to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A castle, a building of great political importance, or an architectural masterpiece are also always nearby.
The City of London and Canary Wharf, which together comprise the city's primary central business area (CBD), comprise the historic center of London. In addition, the City of London serves as a local government territory and a ceremonial county. This area comprised the majority of the city during the Middle Ages, when London was first founded by the Romans in the first century AD, but it has since greatly expanded beyond the limits of the City of London.
The city is no longer a major part of the Greater London metropolitan area, although it still plays a significant role in central London. Unlike the other 32 districts, which also include the only other city in Greater London, the City of Westminster, the City of London is not an administrative borough of London. Because it is an enclave bordered by Greater London, it is also a distinct ceremonial county and the smallest ceremonial county in the United Kingdom.
